Ik was ver van huis. Althans, zo voelde het. Weg van alle warmte, van de lieflijkheid, van charme, van subtiliteit. Met iedere omwenteling die ik maakte – fietsers trappen, wielrenners maken omwentelingen – voelde ik me verder verwijderd van dit alles. De leegte, de eenvoud en het ritme van het landschap maakten een gevoel van nietigheid, onderdanigheid bij me los. Het klopte ook niet. 50-60 jaar geleden zou ik hier nog op een zeebodem gereden hebben en overspoeld worden door metershoge golven, meegesleurd door moeder natuur. Het water is weliswaar verdwenen, de dramatiek is gebleven.

Objects of daily use and the environment we inhabit are commonly regarded as a background against which various activities take place. As such, they are taken for granted and generally do not give rise to a memorable experience, unless their familiarity is disrupted.
