A reflection of the opening of the academic year of the Wageningen University. It is striking how the controversial discipline of landscape architecture within the Wageningen University now seems to play an essential role to be the innovative bridge between scientific knowledge and practical applications for society.

The water level near Arnhem is rising, although so it seemed. From the 26th of February until the 1st of March, the high water gulley (area between summer and winter dike) of the IJssel near Westervoort was flooded by the newest creation of Daan Roosegaarde, in collaboration with water board Rijn and IJssel. ‘Natura 2000 in action’ was the motivating title of the third annual conference of the European Learning Network for Regions and Biodiversity, which took place on 10 and 11 December 2014 in the stunning Sant Pau in Barcelona, Spain. I had the pleasure to be invited for both days. They were filled with presentations and workshops that aimed to make the organization of Natura 2000 areas more multidisciplinary, instead of keeping it in the realm of the ecologists.

The book ‘Dutch Dikes’ by LOLA landscape architects has already been in the book stores for a month now, and the Dutch version of the book already sold out. LOLA, Eric Luiten and Henk Ovink spoke about dike typologies, new dikes and water-defence icons. TOPOS online made a summary of the evening for the ones who missed it.

We spent five weeks exploring the possibilities for sustainable tourism development on the island and creating different spatial scenarios that we presented to the inhabitants of Statia.

Dirk Oudes and Sven Stremke have managed to convince the directors from LAGI (LandArtGeneratorInitiative) to give a Skype presentation to Landscape Architecture students on the 7th of January. Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry are outstanding and, by now, have run 3 global competitions with mind blowing propositional designs of which the first ones are being implemented now.

As for the most people the holidays have started, a lot of people are travelling around. If you happen to stumble across Rotterdam, then there is of course the IABR (International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam) exhibition at the Kunsthal.
